Unseeded freshman Nick Velde was one of three Emmaus wrestlers to advance to the semifinals of the 51st Annual Tony Iasiello Memorial Christmas City Wrestling Tournament on Friday at Bethlehem Catholic High School.
Velde, the Hornets 120-pounder, upset two top-seeded opponents as he pinned Sam Lederman of First Colonial in 1:39 before advancing to the semifinals with a 13-7 win over Matt Inman, the second-seed from Annville-Cleona.
Joining Velde in the semifinals will be teammates junior Caden Wright, the No. 2 seed at 170, who defeated Bethlehem Catholic’s Jaden Youwakim 6-4 in the quarterfinals and senior Luigi Mannino, the No. 4 seed at 220, who advanced with a third period pin over Xavier Garcia of Dieruff.
Six other Emmaus wrestlers – freshman Gio Lainez (113), sophomore Kordell Waiters (126), senior Jackson Karrat (138), freshman Jared Groller (152), senior Chris Tigar (160), sophomore Conner Carter (182) – will try to battle their way back through the consolation round.
Currently, the Hornets are second in the team standings with 72 points. As expected, Becahi leads with 100 points and 13 wrestlers returning for action on Saturday.
