Wrestling – Wright lone Hornet to reach semifinal, 12 others still alive after Day One of the District XI Championships

2/23/19

Day One of the District XI Class 3A Wrestling Tournament wrapped up on Friday night and the good news for Emmaus is that they still have 12 of their 14 wrestlers alive in competition.

The bad news is all but one of those 12 will be facing elimination when they take the mat at 9 a.m. on Saturday when the tournament resumes at Liberty’s Memorial Gymnasium.

Caden Wright, who’s seeking his second straight individual title, was the only Hornet to go unscathed on the first day as he rolled up a pair of impressive wins in advancing to the semifinals at 170 pounds.

His teammates, however, weren’t as fortunate facing rugged competition in arguably the toughest district in the state.

“The first round was a litle disappointing but you know what, at the same time it wasn’t,” said Emmaus head coach Thad Smith whose team went just 5-9 in the opening round. “We faced a lot of top seeds. Going through that consolation round the boys stepped up. Even the two that lost (Quin Scott and Jack Brion) wrestled really, really well and it’s a shame they won’t be back tomorrow. I’ll take 12 coming back on Day 2.”

Wright had no trouble of disposing his two opponents as he rolled up a 16-0 technical fall over Parkland’s Josh Wieder and a first period pin over Northampton’s Traisach Roland in 1:31. Up next, will be a semifinal match vs Easton’s Isaiah Reinert.

“Very pleased with Caden tonight,” said Smith. “This is what we’ve been preaching to him for the last two weeks. He just has to open up and wrestle. Don’t keep matches close and score points. When you score a lot early, it makes your opponent make mistakes because they are now wrestling to catch up.”

Freshman Nick Velde (126), senior Jackson Karrat (138), senior Chris Tigar (160) and sophomore Connor Carter (182) all won their opening matches before falling into the consolation round.

Joining them in wrestlebacks will be senior James Bowie (106), sophomore Gio Lainez (113), sophomore Kordell Waiters (126), freshman Jared Groller (152), junior Bryce Ebinger (195), senior Luigi Mannino (220) and sophomore James Santichen (285).
