Boys Soccer – Hornets celebrate season at annual awards banquet; senior Callen Reid named team MVP

The Emmaus boys soccer team looked back to the 2018 season at its annual awards banquet on Sunday December 2, which included the handing out of team awards and a celebration of the senior class. The banquet was held at Bear Creek Mountain Resort & Conference Center.


Coach John Cari’s varsity squad finished with a 15-7-1 overall mark, including a 12-3-1 record in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference. The Hornets also reached the District XI Championship game for an uprecendented eighth straight season, the most by any team in the history of Lehigh Valley soccer. The team also qualified for the PIAA State Tournament for the third time in the last four years.


Senior Callen Reid won a pair of awards, including being named the team’s MVP voted on by his teammates. A defender, Reid was a key member of a backline that surrendered just 22 goals in 23 games, including posting nine shutouts. He was also the recipient of the Scholar-Athlete award. Reid is considering MIT, Johns Hopkins, Penn or Bucknell to further his education.


Junior forward Jake Groh was named the Most Outstanding Offensive Player after leading the team with 15 goals on the season.


Senior Alex Aiken was recoginzied as the team’s Most Outstanding Defensive Player, while junior Eric Johnson was the recipent of the Most Outstanding Midfielder.


The eight seniors on this year’s squad included: Callen Reid, Alex Aiken, Justin Llado, Connor Dang, Evan Wittman, Creyn Muthard, Anthony DeCresci and Alex Tomasello.


The JV team also received special recognition after finishing the season 13-2-2 overall. Head coach Matt Squire’s team posted 12 shutouts and outscored its opponents 56-5.
