Talk about an early-season statement win.
The Emmaus girls cross country certainly delivered one on Tuesday afternoon with their win over the defending EPC and District XI champion Easton at Bicentennial Park.
“It’s certainly a big win for the team as Easton has top district runners from last year and they were the district champs,” said Emmaus head coach Kami Reinhard of her team’s win over the Red Rovers. “The progression of our girls from their first race to this one on the same course is the most impressive part.”
The Hornets, who also defeated both Nazareth and Northampton to start the season 3-0, got outstanding performances from their top five runners who all placed in the top 10.
“Our top five girls all had their best times,” said Reinhard. “Senior and captain Grace Nosal had the best race of her life with nearly a minute time drop and a win to set up the girls’ team really well.”
Nosal crossed the finish line first in a time of 19:19, some 26 seconds better than Easton’s Lyla Knoble.
Also, for Emmaus, junior Samantha Reidnauer was fourth (20:21), followed by sophomore Myla Felegy (fifth/20:25), junior Aubrey Kazmierczak (sixth/20:39) and sophomore Nitzana Jamaica (seventh/21:31).
While the Emmaus girls pulled off a surprise with their win over Easton, there wasn’t much drama for their male counterparts as the Hornets rolled to wins over Easton, Nazareth and Northampton.
Junior David Hearn crossed the finish line first in a time of 15:58, while his classmate Roen Woolf, finished a close second, 16:07. Sophomore Mason Hipp also had a strong race placing fifth, 17:01
Both squads will return to action on September 22 at Allentown Parkway when they take on Pleasant Valley, Pocono Mountain East and West.
