Facing one of the top teams in District 3 in Cumberland Valley on their home field on Saturday morning, Emmaus found themselves in a battle in the first half leading by just one goal after the Eagles became just the second team this season to score against the Hornets.
The second half, however, head coach Sue Butz Stavin’s squad took over as they scored a pair of goals while keeping the home team scoreless as Emmaus kept their perfect record intact with a 4-1 victory.
Four different players scored goals in the non-league victory for the Hornets who improved to 8-0 on the season. Emmaus also won their 20th straight game dating back to last season.
Senior Gracie Huffer got the scoring started in the first quarter with her team-leading 12th goal of the season to give the Hornets a 1-0 lead, but it was freshman Ellie Fields who wound up scoring the game-winner in the second quarter – her fourth of the season – off a penalty corner with an assist from junior Marissa Gigliotti, who had a pair of assists in the victory.
In the second half, senior Madi Lenig found the back of the cage with her sixth goal of the season to push the advantage to 3-1, and junior Ella Horner closed out the scoring in the final quarter with her 10th goal of the year off a penalty corner.
Cumberland Valley, which had entered play on a five-game winning streak, scored their lone goal of the game in the second quarter a Phia Hunter goal. The Eagles dropped to 6-3 with the loss.
Emmaus outshot the hosts 16-10 in the game with the Hornets holding a 10-7 advantage in penalty corners. Senior Emily Romano was credited with nine saves in goal, including a stop on a penalty stroke in the third quarter. Her counterpart, Addison McCabe, also had nine stops.
The Hornets will return to action on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. as they host Easton on Youth Night.
