After struggling to score points through the first two weeks of the season, Emmaus finally found an opponent to get its offense right.
With six different players scoring touchdowns and a defense that pitched its first shutout of the season, the Hornets cruised to their first win of the season on Friday night in a 42-0 blowout of Scranton at East Penn School District Stadium.
Emmaus, which was off to 0-2 start for the second year in a row, dominated not only on the scoreboard but statistically rushing for nearly 400 yards (390) on the ground while totaling 527 total yards compared to just 102 for the Knights.
Senior running back Mamolo Bermudez ran for a career-high 186 yards on just 10 carries and scored his first career varsity TD, while junior quarterback Kellen Hafner threw a pair of touchdown passes for the Hornets who built a 28-0 lead at the half.
Hafner hooked up for the second consecutive week with classmate Ty Laird on a 9-yard TD pass and on a 51-yard scoring strike on a flea flicker to junior Jacquez Pletz.
Junior Nik Castro scored his first career varsity TD on a 18-yard fumble recovery that was set up on a career-best 66-yard run by Bermudez, and freshman Anderson Lenig closed out the scoring in the fourth quarter with his first touchdown, a 67-yard run. Junior running back Jacob Erbrick saw his first varsity action and had 64 yards on the ground on just two carries.
Defensively, junior Jerel Robinson led the Hornets with five tackles, two TFLs and a fumble recovery. Senior Shane Leyden was next with four tackles and junior Logan Brouse had three tackles, including a pair of TFLs.
Scranton remained winless on the season (0-3) after dropping its third straight game. The Knights, who have scored just one touchdown on the season, managed just 80 yards on the ground and 22 through the air.
Emmaus will play their third straight home game this Friday at 7 p.m. as they host an undefeated Pocono Mountain East squad (3-0). The Eastern Pa. Sports Network will provide LIVE coverage beginning at 6:30 p.m.
