The Emmaus wrestling team had its best showing ever at the Denver Duals Saturday as the Hornets finished in third place in their final tournament of the regular-season.

Head coach Thad Smith’s squad went 2-1 in the eight-team field and defeated Garden Spot 42-33 in the third place match to improve on its fourth place finish from a year ago and fifth place finish in 2016-17.

Three straight pins in the final four bouts from junior Caden Wright (170), sophomore Conner Carter (182) and senior Bryce Ebinger (195) sealed the win for the Hornets over the Spartans.

Emmaus opened the tournament by pounding the host school Cocalico 56-15 before dropping a tight 37-34 decision to the eventual champion, Wilson West Lawn from Berks County.

Wright, who had been out of the lineup with an injury since last competing at the Zephyr Duals back on January 5, was one of three Hornets to go undefeated (3-0) joining teammates senior Jackson Karrat (138) and junior James Santichen (285).

Five other Emmaus wrestlers – freshmen Nick Velde (120) and Jared Groller (152), sophomores Kordell Waiters (126) and Carter (182) along with Ebinger (195) – all went 2-1.

The Hornets will return home on Wednesday, January 23 when they compete in their final Eastern Pennsylvania Conference match of the regular-season hosting Whitehall on Alumni and Hall of Fame Night at 7 p.m
