RECAP >> A fast start by rival Parkland was too much for Emmaus to overcome on Saturday afternoon at Parkland High School as the Trojans scored the game’s first nine goals and rolled to 18-8 win, handing the Hornets their first loss in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference.

“I’m not sure why the slow start today,” said Emmaus head coach Roxann Betz. “This game was a game of possession and we weren’t getting any of the possessions off the draw in the first half.”

“In the second half we started to dig a little deeper and come up with some of the possessions and that makes a huge difference. They (the players) came out with a lot of heart in the second half and we just wanted them to try and get back into the game and I think we did that. “

Emmaus did indeed come out after a sluggish first half and establish momentum early in the second as they scored three unanswered goals to get within five at 11-6. But the Trojans responded, scoring seven of the game’s final nine goals as they defeated the Hornets for the 12th time in the last 13 meetings dating back to 2014.

Emmaus, which was coming off a pair of wins over Northampton and Central Catholic earlier in the week, dropped to 2-1 in the EPC and 4-2 overall, while Parkland remained unbeaten in the league at 3-0 and 4-3 overall.

Senior Grace Hall led the Hornets with a hat trick and moved within four goals of reaching 100 for her career. Classmate Taylor O’Brien and junior Kaitlyn Csensits each added a pair of goals, while freshman Julia Cote also also figured into the scoring.

Parkland’s high-power offense was led by senior Morgan Hurd who scored four of her game-high five goals in the first half. Teammate junior Emily Leiby added four goals and freshman Kaz Kennedy added a hat trick. Junior Jill Bushinsky added a pair of goals to go along with a game-high three assists.

The Trojans out shot Emmaus 24-11 in the game and dominated the draw controls winning 18 of 25. Senior Kenzie Galucy was credited with two saves in net for Parkland, while her counterpart, senior Chloe Gerhard for the Hornets made eight stops.

Emmaus will return to action at 5 p.m. Monday when they return home to Memorial Field to host Pleasant Valley
