Softball – Hornets let late two-run lead slip away as Hazleton scores 3 runs in last at-bat to stun Emmaus 5-4

RECAP >> Emmaus let a two-run lead slip away in their non-league game at Hazleton on Friday as the Cougars scored three runs in their final at-bat and stunned the Hornets 5-4.

Hazleton catcher Julia Mooney delivered a two-run single in the bottom of the seventh inning off Hornets starter junior Tatum Kresley scoring the game-tying and game-winning runs as the Cougars defeated Emmaus for the second consecutive season.

The loss was the second in as many days for coach Brittany D’Agostino’s team who dropped to 2-2 on the season.

Emmaus led for most of the game, holding leads of 1-0, 2-1 and its biggest lead 4-1 in the fifth inning before Hazleton was able to rally with a three-run seventh inning.

Sophomore shortstop Marah Sisonick led the offense going 2-for-4 with two RBI. Senior catcher Abby Bartels also had two hits and drove in the game’s first run, and classmate Lily Trexler went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

Kresley, in her first start of the season, suffered the loss after allowing 14 hits in 6 1-3 innings.The junior struck out seven.

Mooney, second baseman Julia Mrochko and shortstop Marissa Trivelpiece all had three hits for the Cougars who went 22-2 a year ago and reached the PIAA State playoffs. Third baseman Tiana Treon and left fielder Olivia Wolk each added two hits.

The Hornets will look to snap their two-game skid on Monday at 4 p.m. as they return to league play traveling to Whitehall.
